The corned beef sandwich that went to spaceDid you know that a corned beef sandwich was the object of (mild, for NASA) controversy during the 1965 Gemini III flight?
"The crew of Gemini III snuck a corned beef sandwich on their spaceflight. Mission Commander Gus Grissom loved corned beef sandwiches, so Pilot John Young brought one along, having been encouraged by fellow astronaut Walter Schirra. However, Young was supposed to only eat approved food, and Grissom wasn't supposed to eat anything. Floating pieces of bread posed a potential problem, causing Grissom to put the sandwich away (although he did enjoy it) and the astronauts were mildly rebuked by NASA for the act. A congressional hearing was called, forcing the NASA deputy administrator George Mueller to promise no repeats. NASA took special care about what astronauts brought along on future missions."

The Mavwich!"A patented system from Europe (“Croustwich”) for the preparation, presentation and distribution of fresh, healthy and nutritional sandwiches. Cold or hot fillings in fresh baked warm bread. Rapid, efficient with a variety of custom sandwich offerings."
"We all know that life would be better if we could make a sandwich by typing "Sudo Make Me A Sandwich" on the command line of a computer. Adam Cecchetti and I made that dream come to life this last weekend."
"The winner of Jif's Most Creative Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest this year was the Po' Boy Peanut Butter Chicken Cheese Steak, created by Jordyn Boyer, age 10. Featuring ingredients like Worcestershire sauce, mozzarella, a hoagie bun, and chicken, that jar of strawberry jelly might find itself collecting dust in the pantry for quite some time."
The McGangBangWell here's something we hadn't though of... The McGangBang!
The McGangBang ranks up there in the holy pantheon of WTF. It's a sandwich made from a double cheeseburger and a McChicken sandwich — where you put an entire McChicken sandwich inside a double cheeseburger. It's a creative manipulation of existing menu items, and an exerhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifcise in frugality: taking two items off of the Dollar Menu and creating an entirely new sandwich for a total of $2.16. Truly, it's a sandwich that's more than the sum of its parts.

The Carnegie Deli Pastrami Sandwich Mitosis"A little while back, Ed came into the office with a Carnegie Deli pastrami sandwich and a plan. He wanted to see how many normal-sized sandwiches (still healthy portions) he could make from the usual serving size. At $14.95 a pop, the meaty monster is five inches tall. It's the snake jaw of sandwiches, to steal Adam's line for a hamburger so fat, you need a snake's hinged jaw to take a bite.
We pretended this sandwich was a mother cell to be divvied into daughter cells, full of pastrami chromosomes."
198 City of Lunch - Campfire Goods, Inc.Got an email from sandwich fan Megan about this cool t-shirt...
I came across your sandwich blog through a friend's link and thought you might appreciate this T-shirt designed by a friend's graphic design company (in honor of my hometown of Sandwich, NH -- part of their city series).
P.S.: I am still recovering from NSM. I have eaten more salads in September than I have all summer.

I tried to do a wild grand finale -- thinking maybe a tripe or snoot sandwich would fit the bill -- but lots of the BBQ places with those selections are closed on Sundays. C&K was open, but to be honest I didn't feel like heading north today (I'm a little sluggish after all those sandwiches).
So... cucumber, feta and tzatziki sauce on pita. Light, but filling. Thanks Diane!
I may get one more sandwich in tonight (ice cream sandwich?). If not, I'll see y'all next NSM!
Feel free to add suggestions for next year on any of my sandwich photos here on Flickr.
